Italy has so much to offer residents and if you want to be a part of all Italy has to offer, then pack up your things and get ready to move. When moving your items, you will need to know what rules and regulations are followed by customs in order to keep safety a top priority and your goods handled correctly. As you pack, take the time to create a list to stay organized.
You can ship personal effects and household goods as well as vehicles, construction equipment, boats, travel trailers, and more. However there are different rules and regulations for everything.
Shipping Vehicles
For Non-Diplomat, the rules are as follows:
Passport of the owner Valid insurance for Italy Original title in the name of the owner/importer Data sheet from the manufacturer that lists all the vehicle specifications and European Requirements An official certificate of residence issued by the Italian City Hall. This certificate will also state that the vehicle owner has been abroad for a period of twelve months or more and the vehicle will be imported within a six month period of the time you arrive.Non-Diplomats must be present at the time of clearance. You will be able to drive on your import document legally in Italy for a period of six months to get things changed over correctly on your vehicle. After the six months are up, you will be illegal to drive unless your vehicle meets specifications. You will not need to pay duty if you can show proof that you own the vehicle.
For Diplomats, the rules are as follows:
You will need the original title in the owner's name The original registration A valid insurance policy in Italy Manufacturer invoice with European specifications Original passport A copy of the diplomatic franchise. This should be addressed to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is issued by the a diplomatic organization in ItalyDiplomats should arrive at least forty days before the vehicles are imported to Italy. All necessary documents must be presented at time of customs clearance in order to avoid paying duty.
For citizens, the rules are as follows:
The owner must present the original title and have it in their name Must show the original manufacturer declaration listing the car specifications A copy of the owner's passport The original registration of the vehicle Returning citizens need a document issued by a consulate An original certificate issued by the Italian City HallCitizens moving vehicles to Italy will not need to pay duty if they own and operate a vehicle that meets European requirements.
You can import boats, travel trailers, motor homes, or if you own a business that is going to be operated in Italy you can ship commercial vehicles including construction equipment too.
Household Goods and Personal Effects
When shipping household goods and personal effects, you will need to show proof of your items by providing a valid passport with a picture, a copy of the tax code number, and a complete packing list with details of everything you packed.
All personal effects must not exceed more than 50 cubic feet. More than that will not be considered baggage and will require different paperwork. If you are importing new furniture you will need to obtain authorization first. You will also need to pay duty and VAT.
